There’s been a lot of negative publicity around plastic products, predominately around single use items, such as plastic forks, coffee cups, cotton buds and carrier bags. And rightly so; as a developed nation, it’s time to start thinking hard about the products we use and the impact they have on the environment. In a bid to cut the amount of waste we produce, the government issued a list of 10 items in December 2018, which will be completely eliminated to reduce carbon emissions and reduce the amount of plastic products polluting the environment.
In the quest to reduce our plastic consumption many of us are finding ways to eliminate plastic usage.
So would you choose a plastic decking system for your outdoor space?
You might be surprised, read on for our 5 GOOD reasons in favour of it.
1. DekBoard is Fully Recyclable
DekBoard is NOT single use.
At the end of your deck’s life, it can be fully recycled – not sent to land fill or to litter the seas. In fact, we commit to, as part of our Recovinyl membership to re-use all of the waste from our factory and to take back post-consumer waste.
So there is no need for any of our products to end up anywhere other than our re-grinder, ready to be made into something else.

2. DekBoard Uses Responsibly Sourced Materials and Manufacturing Processes
The plastics used in DekBoard products are made with recycled polymers, which are reground in our own factory, this helps to reduce unnecessary shipping of materials and allows us to closely monitor and minimise our own emissions and resultant environmental impact.
The manufacturing process is carried out under ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management.
3. DekBoard Never Needs to be Painted or Varnished
No varnish or paint products are needed in the maintenance of DekBoard decking or balustrading, which means the potential for seepage of toxic products into landfill at the end of its life is eliminated. The most effort you’ll need to put in to keep your deck looking ship-shape, is a regular sweep and an occasional hose down.
4. DekBoard Doesn’t Use Trees
Transporting of wood products used in wooden decking contributes to the carbon footprint, forestresearch.gov.uk tells us that 7.9 million cubic metres of sawn wood was imported into the UK in 2017. That’s a heck of a lot of wood to cargo and a massive burden on the environment. And based on recent news on the issues around some plastics, is no surprise that wood imports to the UK are the highest in 10 years.
5. DekBoard is Safe
It’s worth mentioning here – although it isn’t anything to do with the environment per se – that DekBoard features a non-slip finish, won’t rot and will never splinter, which should help alleviate any doubts about moving away from wood in moving to a plastic decking system.
